Teenager arrested in hammer assault BANGOR, Maine — A Glenburn teenager who was riding around in a car with a couple of other teens late Wednesday, reportedly pulled out a hammer and hit another teenager in the head, Bangor police Sgt. Chip Hodges said Friday.
The victim, a 17-year-old boy from Bangor, escaped his attacker by jumping out of the vehicle when it stopped on outer Ohio Street, he said.
“He got out of the car and ran into the woods,” Hodges said. “Then the car [he was in] left.”
The victim was able to call a relative who picked him up and gave him a ride to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he met with a police officer at about 11:30 p.m.
He had injuries to his head and was treated at the hospital and later released.
The following day, Glenburn resident Lawrence Dipietro, 18, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault and taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he spent the night.
“They knew each other,” Hodges said of the car’s occupants. “This is not considered to be a random act.”
Bangor Police Department’s criminal investigation division is investigating the incident. The assault of the 17-year-old on Wednesday is not related to other recent teen assaults in town, but several of those involved do know each other, Hodges said.
The use of the hammer, which is considered a deadly weapon when used in an assault, boosted the charges against Dipietro to a felony, Hodges said, adding, “We do have the hammer.”
If convicted of the aggravated assault, Dipietro could face a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
Dipietro has his first court appearance on Friday and was released from jail later in the day after posting a $1,000 cash bail, a jail official said.
Dipietro also faces charges that stem from a March 9 incident at the Sigma Nu fraternity at the University of Maine, according to a March 11 Bangor Daily News article.
In that incident, Dipietro was visibly intoxicated and got into an argument with members of the fraternity. After they asked him to leave, DiPietro started smashing windows in the fraternity house, and was charged with criminal mischief and possession of alcohol by a minor through consumption.
