Bangor Auditorium fire sends worker to hospital

BANGOR, Maine — A small fire Wednesday night in the boiler room at the Bangor Auditorium sent one Bass Park employee to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation symptoms, a Fire Department official said.

Assistant Fire Chief Rick Cheverie said he was unable to disclose the employee’s name, citing federal confidentiality rules. Cheverie said late Wednesday that he had not yet been able to confirm where the worker was taken, but believed it was St. Joseph Hospital.

Cheverie said the fire was reported at 9:23 p.m. and that crews from the department’s Central Station and Station 5 both went to the scene. He said that when firefighters arrived, they found light smoke in the building, which grew thicker as they neared the boiler room, where they found a cardboard box and a 5-gallon plastic bucket containing tools and parts on fire.

The fire’s cause, he said, is under investigation.

“The boiler was not affected,” Cheverie said, adding that some electrical components near the box and bucket were burned. He estimated damage at about $500.

Cheverie said the fire was extinguished within minutes, but firefighters remained at the auditorium for about an hour to ventilate smoke from the building’s main lobby and nearby hallways.

That does it! Tear that thing down and build a new one.

They should have left it to burn down, problem solved...I do hope the worker is well......

I also say they should've left it to burn...

i would've brough the marshmallows :)

The Bangor Aud still has many useful years left in it with a little $$$ and TLC. The current new arena plan is a WASTE OF MONEY. A smaller seating capacity and no ice = failure on arrival.

It is good that the employee is okay. But they should have let it just burn down. It is time that Bangor got into the new age and built a new one.

Jeff, that's easy to say from California!

Tommie i agree with you, i bet that employee got paid from the director to somehow get smoke in the building. NO NEW ARENA, FIRE MIKE DWYER GET A CLUE BANGOR

Hey Kenzie boy, it's Mike Dyer. If you want someone fired, at least know who you are speaking of. Get a clue.

The Bangor Auditorium is no Lewiston Collissee, but it still is the right size for Bangor. And I saw a high school game there last year and it was very pleasant experience. its not an architectural dynamo but it functions just fine. If a private developer doesnt see a profit in a new arena than i don't think our area needs a new one.

hey Brettski thank you and i made a mistake in the nane, you get a clue.

Kenzie.........How can you agree with tommie then make the statement that you did?????????????............

Good thing this didn't happen next month.... Can you imagine the possible carnage with 1500 screaming high school basketball fans. Good thing there are 11 other months that the building sits empty.

Whoo BIG ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY FROM BANGOR AUDITORIUM! WE HAVE A MAJOR ACT COMING TO BANGOR....the first in how many months? OH AND GUESS WHAT IT IS? What every person in the area has been absolutely dying to see.....SESAME STREET ON ICE! Money maker? GET A CLUE YOURSELF. The major acts that are no longer coming to Bangor..have quit because the Bangor Auditorium's Electrical system is so outdated that it cannot handle the load required by them. The building itself leaks, and is a heating nightmare. There are damp spots all over the place, which promote MOLD growth. and the last time I was in the Auditorium (during the H1N1 clinics) there was more dust on the windowsills then there was dirt in the parking lot. Get rid of the damn place...oh and by the way..there was a section closed off because of ....Asbestos....Yeah you got it ASBESTOS which was supposedly taken care of ohhh 15 yrs ago! Tear the place down and come into the 21st century Bangor..you have a beautiful area...use it to it's full potential. Nostaligia has a place, But not at the cost of hundreds of thousands for repairs and clean up.
