Boost gasoline tax

Congratulations to the BDN for the editorial about highway funding (“Stop Highway Juggle,” Jan. 2).

It is past time for our lawmakers to raise enough money to repair our transportation infrastructure. The gasoline tax would be an excellent start.

We all survived $4 a gallon gasoline. I’m sure we would cope with a few cents to fix our roads and

Green Christmas

In the days leading up to Christmas, a great deal of media attention focused (and rightly so) on the Wreaths Across America program begun by Mr. Morrill Worcester in Columbia Falls. It even was featured on a “Making a Difference” segment of “NBC Evening News.” However there was no mention at all of another worthwhile program.

Trees for Troops is a nationwide effort by FedEx and the Christmas Spirit Foundation, a part of the national Christmas Tree Association. More than 16,500 Christmas trees were donated by growers across the country and delivered by FedEx free of charge to families at 50 or more military bases in the U.S.

Each year Maine growers give 300 trees, which are gathered at a central location in Newburgh and picked up by FedEx. The trees this year went to Fort Campbell, Ky. They were accompanied by 300 bags of at least 10 ornaments each, gathered by the women of the Maine Christmas Tree Association. Several American Legion posts in Maine have been helpful in getting the trees to Newburgh and they are loaded on the truck by members of Post 201, Dixmont.

Leadership needed

Last year was not a good year. My comments focus on the rolls played by congressional leadership and corporate social conscience in addressing the issue of health care reform. Hopefully, at year's end, we all will look back favorably on efforts to extend affordable, quality health care to all in need. Eventually everyone needs it – some more than others.

Events of the past year, however do not bode well for most taxpayers; i.e. the $780 billion corporate bailouts, personal and business bankruptcy filings, home mortgage defaults, rising unemployment, accompanied by increases to already obscene levels of compensation to corporate executives.

Where does health care reform fit into this picture?

Our elected leaders refer to legislation as the “art of compromise for the benefit of all.” There are some big wheels to grease on the health care gravy train. The loudest come from the health care and medical services and insurance industries, which can afford to sustain lobbying efforts.

The outcome of compromise is shaping up to include : more entitlement crumbs to more beneficiaries; more grease to the providers; more deferred debt obligation to shrinking middle and expanding working-poor classes of taxpayers.

Yes, compromise is a well-practiced art form. Placate both the voting needy and influential greedy. That is what passes for leadership in Congress and socially responsive corporate citizenship.

Misplaced confidence

It’s good to know that David Broder has confidence in Janet Napolitano (“’No drama’ Napolitano shows self,” BDN OpEd, Jan. 4).

That Mrs. Napolitano was cool under pressure is reassuring and that her department worked the way it should in the near-destruction of an airliner must be a huge load off those passengers’ minds.

Now, if the bomber’s explosive had gone off, what was it that Napolitano did to save those passengers? Nothing, that’s what. Her department failed in letting a maniac on board a U.S. airline.

All her professional “aplomb” aside, if the bomb had detonated, all would have been lost over Detroit.

Thankfully, the bomber was as inept as is Napolitano’s department.

As for David Broder, his commentary bombed. It was nothing but one more trivial puff piece designed to prop up the failing Obama administration during a

Lieberman a chameleon

Sen. Joe Lieberman lost his primary election to a Connecticut Democrat.

Then he ran as an Independent (with the aid of Republican money) and defeated the Democrat. Thus he is considered an Independent.

Now he has the luxury of pretending to be a Democrat. So he caucuses with the Democrats, who awarded Lieberman a committee chairmanship as a Democrat. Now he votes with the Republicans, who he is in bed with, and caucuses with the Democrats.

Now Lieberman plays the role of a chameleon and is using this role for his own aggrandizement — thus making himself richer by being both a Republican and a Democrat. He is playing both parties to the detriment of the Democrats and the benefit of the Republicans. Why the Democrats are taken in by this chameleon and rewarding him as a leader is beyond comprehension.

Bells for babies

“Bells for Babies” is a national public remembrance for the 50 million babies who have died in the United States over the past 37 years through surgical abortions.

At noon Friday, Jan. 22, all churches in the area are encouraged to ring their bells 50 times, one for each million babies whose lives have ended.

On this day, prayers are encouraged for families to hold together in God’s love and discipline. May the love of God, our creator of life and love for our fellow man; especially our families, the sick, the elderly, our enemies and others prevail. May the virtues of charity and chastity (virginity, celibacy, marriage and love of spouses, children and all) prevail. May the sins of selfishness, violence, wars, perversion of human sexuality (masturbation, fornication, adultery and homosexuality), unforgiveness, the rejection of spouses and children, unborn or born, cease.

People are encouraged to join in prayer at home, on the road, at work, in school, at church for Jesus’ love, forgiveness, mercy and peace in individuals, families, communities, nations and among nations.

St. Mary’s Church of Presque Isle will ring the bells at noon. The Angelus and other prayers will be recited in church. All are welcome.

Gas tax increase? What a wonderful way to boost our economy!!! REALLY??? Why not try cutting taxes and allowing business to actually make a profit and want to come to our state? Has to generate more revenue than trying to get our entire population on public assistance!!!

Sure thing..raise the gas tax. The guy probably rides a bicycle, doesn't have to travel to work and he is lucky gas didn't stay at $4/gal. Maybe he didn't notice that everything else went up in price when gas/oil went up. Amazing how people scream out..TAX ME!

The dems will be as nice to Joe Liebermann as possible...until they lose the 60 vote majority.

At the end of the day, Nat Crowley, Joe Liebermann is a Democrat. In this present climate of Democrat unpopularity, you may see more Joe Lieberman type tactics among democrat 2010 candidates......Republicans be aware.....We saw that recently in the NY 23rd District race....

.

"Bells for Babies" is an interesting idea. Anything to raise awareness of "America's Holocaust"....

So Donciani and LilMikey - what is your solution to the problem? Like most deadbeat Republicans you can sit behind a computer screen and complain. Yet come up with a soultion, I don't think so.

Another tax. Here's an Idea: Everybody that actually works for a living and pays taxes should start paying their own. No more employer deductions for anybody. All you need to do is simply write those federal, state, social security, disability, health insurance, occupation and a plethora of other checks monthly or quarterly like self-employed folks do. Once people realize exactly how much these pirates in government are pulling out of their pocket there will be a revolution. Remember the story about the frog in the boiling water??..

Johnnie Cancelarich you have just stepped into the lion's den. Our society now thrives on perversion with absolutely no though of the consequences. Corruption, Pollution and global warming are the least of our concerns. We are spiritually bankrupt and drowning in immorality.

Nice job John Hubbard.......The Obama Administration is reeling with the latest Terrorist Attack, not because Americans nearly died, but because after his worldwide apology tour in which he went around bowing and apologizing to everyone up to and including the Burger King, the muslim world still hates us. Janet Incompetano is a complete and utter joke, she has zero military and no law enforcement expirence and yet she is in charge of our safety, thanks democrats I feel really safe with you folks watching our backs.

Nat, How did Lieberman vote on HC...with the Dems or Repubs

Additional Gas Tax is a great idea and we should also raise the excise tax by a point or two while we are at it. And lets raise some more taxes to get Dirigo back on track.

To Mr. Lufkin, This state already has a gas tax that produces enough money to take care of our roads. The problem lies with the fact that the pols in Augusta grab these funds for other pork projects and leaves the DOT kitty bare. They know full well that when it comes time to fund the DOT, all they have to due is put a bond issue up for vote. They know that Mainers will always vote to borrow money for fixing roads. If you think raising the gas tax will provide any more money to keep our roads maintained, you are sadly mistaken.

NO FACTS CAN BE PROVIDED!

WHAT A CROCK!

Facts are available on pollution and corruption (dunno 'bout the warming claims)... No facts, no problems.

Good thing flat lander ain't from around here.....We need to cut taxes in this state not add new ones. We just went from the highest taxed state in the country to #3, we don't need to go back. What we need to do is cut the "earned income tax credit" that all the people on welfare get and use the savings to fix our roads. It's hard to believe that people who don't work or contribute anything get a 'tax return', it's beyond absurd.

Thetruth...first off, I am NOT a republican. I happen to be a democrat...a very disgusted democrat. I can give you a very simple solution, lower or cut taxes...not raise them. Put people to work and get them off handouts. I will spell the word for you..W O R K. Or like Joe Biden says, that 3 lettter word..J O B S. Oh Yeah Dat Felt Real Good

Gerald Lufkin of East Millinocket

One of the many thousands who vote to fill our legislature and Blaine House with moonbats, year after year...

The earned income tax credit is for people who work... it's based on earned income. It was an enormous help to me in the early 1990s when I was a working single father raising two kids. When Clinton raised the EIC shortly after he took office, the economy soared. People with marginal incomes spent the money on appliances and other necessities, which in turn created jobs. This worked a lot better than GW Bush's tax cuts for the super-rich, or even Reagan's trickle-down policies.

No the earned income tax credit is the tax return that people on welfare get....They pay no taxes and yet they get a tax refund. It's not for people who work. People who work get tax returns on the taxes that they pay in, no problem with that. My problem is with people that contribute nothing, yet reap the benifits of people that work. It's a ridiculous policy that needs to stop.

You forgot to mention molestation by priests as a "perversion of human sexuality:"

$40,295 ($45,295 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children

$35,463 ($40,463 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child

$13,440 ($18,440 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children

These are the amounts listed on the IRS website. So unless you and your spouse earn less than 48,000 per year together, you aren't getting any EIC. But you contribute nothing to society (you do not work because you're soooooooooooooooo disabled) only able to perform recreational activities, you get a sweet chunk of change. Sticking it to the working class once AGAIN.

LOL maybe TheTruth should learn to read between the lines the answers are very simple stop giving our tax money away to every group of people that decides they will give you their vote if you promise to take care of them. These people should never have left home and stayed with mommy! There are people in genuine need of assistance and we do have a moral obligation to help them, However I literally know dozens of people who cheat the system and are living off our taxes I even know one guy who wanted to go to town so he called an ambulance to take him to the hospital, after he was released he went to the bar!!! My ex sister in law is on public assistance and when her kids are sick she waits till after the doctors office is closed to take them to the emergency room because she has said she enjoys the attention. They are not the only ones, Anyone who has spent any time around any supsidized housing developments can tell you the same types of story's. The solutions lay in our own community's, not in government intervention in our lives. Tell me were is the incentive to work if you have someone to take care of you and all they want from you is for you to continue to vote for them.

TheTruth - So, you can't read. Donciani mentioned one very important part of the solution, cutting taxes so businesses will come to Maine. Cutting the corporate tax in half will bring trillions of dollars back into the country and open up jobs for hundreds of thousands of people right here at home. Lifting the oppressive restrictions on businesses that drove many of them overseas would work wonders to bring them back. And it would generate more revenue to the government than they will ever see if they continue to raise taxes on everything we do, produce, or need.

ziggyz - We are spiritually bankrupt and drowing in immorality. Just check the decline in our educational standing with the rest of the world. Just check the abortion rates. Just check the teen pregnancy rates. Just check the crime rates. How many prisons have been built in the last 40 years, and how many more are being built to house this generation of criminals? Check the drop-out rate in our schools (public schools in particular). Watch any movies or television lately? When the name of Jesus is taken in vain, it is no longer bleeped out, but cussing is. To Christians, taking the name of Jesus is vain is worse than any cuss word. Daytime television is full of sex and immorality. Late night TV, and even a lot of prime time shows have way too much sex and immorality. The Internet is unsafe for children, and even for many adults. And the list goes on and on. ziggyz, our country is spiritually bankrupt. But, if you can't see that, then you probably have no spiritual side in you. And we are drowning in immorality. If you can't see that, then you may be part of the problem. And, yes, that is my opinion.....based on the cold, hard evidence that is staring everyone in the face. Open your eyes.

Electra - Yes, abortion is legal. But that doesn't make it right. Abortion is murder, plain and simple.

hank - Clinton raising the EIC had very little to do with the economy soaring. If it did, the economy would still be soaring because the EIC is still in play and costing hard working taxpayers more and more each year. It is nothing more than a vote getting tool. As for what many people purchase with their EIC checks, I could tell you some stories that should make your blood boil. But, I'm sure you could, too.

Johnnie Cancelarich, it took us most of the last century to dig ourselves out of the delusional sewer to which you would have us return. You're on the wrong meds.

EJ, "murder" is a legal term used by the government to define a crime. Abortion is not a crime and therefore is not murder. It is moot to discuss its legality.

I agree with you EJ, murder is murder, how they choose

William - Taking the life of an unborn, innocent baby is murder, plain and simple.

"Leadership needed" by Mike McVicker of Weston triumphantly exposes our national corpocracy. "Eternal vigilence is the price of liberty; power is ever stealing from the many to the few" - Wendell Phillips.

Johnnie Cancelarich of Presque Isle, your letter "Bells for babies" is quite polite and warm. But maybe people who believe God is against a woman's right to choose should take a moment to ask God why, according to Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia:"It is estimated that some 25 percent of all human pregnancies terminate spontaneously in abortion". Maybe He and our mothers know best what's in store for us. And if God didn't want us to masterbate, why didn't he make our arms shorter?

John Hubbard of Bangor, why in your successfully succinct letter "Misplaced confidence" do you claim the Obama administration is failing? Pat Lamarche's OpEd today pointed out that December was the "first month in six years without a U.S. casualty in Iraq", the Dow Jones Industrial is back over 10,000 (10,579), the banks are paying back their TARP funds ( http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/10/business/economy/10tarphtml ), and the PETN "bomb" on the Airbus 330 flight carrying 278 passengers for some reason didn't explode on our Savior's celebrated birthday. "Success is how high you bounce after you hit rock bottom" - General George S. Patton.

The BDD must be some proud of the misinformation you have been feeding your readers for them to have written such letters.

Raise the gasoline tax to $4.00 sounds like a great idea and should be most welcome for those who need to truck groceries across the state in order to feed a million people scattered around the state.

John Hubbard speaks of the incompetent DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, however the department responsible for allowing the under-pants bomber in the USA is the State Department, lead by Hillary R . Clinton.

Nate Growley speaks of Senator Lieberman (D/I CT) being Republican in thinking. The one place where Lieberman agrees with Republicans is in protecting the lives of Americans. You are correct that Lieberman is not part of the "Hate America" party, however he supports most left wing causes. He is even supporting the socialized medicine in order to use billions of health care funds to support the trial lawyers instead of the patients.

ElectraGlide, contraceptives take effect prior to conception. Abortion is a long time after conception. They are not the same.

Honestly why would you not use contraceptives if you do not wish to have a child? Sure the contraceptive being used could fail, but it is very unlikely this accounts for all abortions. Sure some are because or rape and because of the health of the mother. What is the real percentage of abortions that are performed simply because the people involved in creating this life were to irresponsible to protect themselves from pregnancy?

DisgustedAmerican - Your rant fails to mention anything about the rights of the unborn to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. No one has the right to take that away from anyone, unborn or born. And, for your information, I have adopted a child, and I've worked at and raised money for several orphanages oveseas and in the States. Through my connection with a couple of these orphanages, several military couples were able to adopt children directly from the orphanages without having to pay the high cost of lawyers, and everything was perfectly legal. I've also never defended, nor paid any money to defend a child mollestor. Child mollestors should be castrated and sent to Siberia or maybe East Saint Louis. And those that support abortions should be requred to witness what happens to the unborn child during this process.

Change the excise tax from value of vehicle to weight of vehicle so that the vehicles doing the most damage pay their share of the tax.

Put a temporary toll on all new capital expenditures like new bridges, and new (not repaired) roads. This way the folks who actually USE the new facilities will pay the lion's share of the State levy. regionalize at least 50% of State gas tax so that the people who are spending the money on gas tax get at least half of what they pay for. Right now the Northern and Eastern parts of the State pay the greatest amount of gas tax, and the Southern and Western regions get the most capital improvements. knock the weight limit of large trucks down to 80.000 lbs on Maine's secondary roads, and quadruple the fine for over weight limit violations. He managed to evade security get on a plane and ignite his explosive device. The fact that it didn't explode as planned doesn't mean it was prevented. Actually WilliamDS it is you that is the Oxymoron.....Fascism, Socialism and Communism may all have distinct minor differences, Govt' owned, VS Govt' controled VS Govt' subsidized but Blittler et. al. is 100% correct. They all result in the Government killing innocent civilians for their political gain, and they all need to be wiped of the face of the Earth by any means necessary!

Don't worry there are forces much larger than the woefully pathetic liberal rag that is the BDN that are taking notice. In fact the rumor is there maybe a 'house cleaning' at the BDN to rid it of it's overwhelming liberal stench.

Your right Astroglide: Let's start with all the racist filth in the Democrat party like Byrd, the only KKK member in Congress. I think he was a Grand Dragon. If it weren't for the Conservatives thier would still be slaves to this day. I'm glad all those Republicans died to free the slaves.

Now we need to stop the Democrats who are trying to creat a whole other generation of slaves.

KKK membersihip is nearly 100% democrat, according to their own statistics. Personally I think they should all be imprisoned for life.

Apparently Ralphy ole boy you ain't been payin' attention. The BDN deletes conservative posts and users all the time. Not only that but they also block your e-mail address so you can't create another username. It's quite legal for them to do it, it's their paper. But they are doing it to their own ruin. Unbeknownst to them, their actions are being recorded, by a third party. They think that if they delete the posts they no longer exist. In fact they most certainly do, it's quite easy to print them and then compare the result to the current 'display'. They are just steering themselves into oblivion.

Of course it's phonics Ralphy. The (sic) was for the Obama mouth breather I was posting for.

EJ, these people are just a more sophisticated KKK.

The Fellowship (also known as “The Familiy”) and Uganda

The Fellowship, through Senator Brownback and Representative Joe Pitts (R.-Pa.), redirected millions in US aid to Uganda from sex education programs to abstinence programs, thereby causing an evangelical revival, which included condom burnings, and doubling the incidence of AIDS.

In a November 2009 NPR interview, Jeff Sharlet alleged that Ugandan Fellowship associates David Bahati and Nsaba Buturo were behind the recent proposed bill in Uganda that called for the death penalty for gays.

Sharlet reveals that David Bahati, the Uganda legislator backing the bill, reportedly first floated the idea of executing gays during The Family's Uganda National Prayer Breakfast in 2008. Mr. Sharlet described Mr. Bahati as a "rising star" in the Fellowship who has attended the National Prayer Breakfast in the United States and, until the news over the gay execution law broke, was scheduled to attend this year's U.S. National Prayer Breakfast.

Family member Bob Hunter gave an interview to NPR in December in which he acknowledged Bahati's connection but argued that no American associates support the bill.

William - Well, I guess the secret is out. You should talk someone on the BDN staff into looking into this group. Sounds like a Pulitzer. And you know newspaper people love Pulitzers.

The New York Times has covered this story, EJ.

Many posters have had listings deleted by the BDN and not just "conservative posts". For the most part they are deleted when they violate the Guidelines we all agree to when we first start posting here.

Have you ever purchased something online requiring a user name? Have you ever forgotten that user name and tried to establish a second user name with the same email address? Want to guess what happens? You get blocked as the email account you used to sign on the first time already has a user name assigned to it!

As for "Unbeknownst to them, their actions are being recorded, by a third party" I would argue that these "third party" individuals have way to much time on their hands to "record" what the BDN removes.

Do you really believe the BDN thinks that posts they delete "no longer exist?" Any company with a legal department knows and understands that anything which has been posted on the internet exists on the world wide web long after being deleted and can be retrieved by an experienced person.

But if you want to keep looking for the conspiracy in everything that is your business. But not everything that happens or is done by a company or person is done with a hidden agenda.

I like the Conspiracy Theory #102 ......

Is it at all possible that comments could be deleted by a poster and not someone at the BDN?

I wouldn't think so Lady Slipper.

They would actually have to hack in to their computers.

Who know's anything is possible..

Maybe one of these posters is a Phantom BDN worker?????

9:54 pm, William you should look up the Christian Patriot movement, of which EJ Parsons is a member.

I think Lady Slipper was talking about actually having the comment totally deleted......

I actually mentioned to Todd they should have the same feature as facebook, the person who wrote the comment can actually delete his own comment.

Sometimes people say something they didn't really want to or it came out the wrong way....

8:54 am, I see. Just because you blog about being a Christian Patriot doesn't mean you're a Christian Patriot. Talking out of both sides of your mouth there, ain't ya?

I see the thumbs down wienies have been at work...

anne - Nothing that I've blogged mentions me being a member of any organization. Just because I claim to be a Christian Patriot, does not make me a member of that group (of whick I didn't know existed until you brought it up, by the way). I do have a credit union card in my wallet, so I guess that makes me a credit union member. I have a USAA card, so there's another group I'm part of. I am retired from the military, so there's one more. I have a Tractor Supply card, a Staples card, a Wal-Mart card, a CVS card, a Books-a-Million card, a Lowe's card, a Home Depot card, a Disney World Photo Pass, and a couple of other pieces of plastic in my wallet. Do those cards make me members of all of those places? Oops, almost forgot my expired Sam's Club Card. Hmmmm. I seem to be missing my Christian Patriot card, my Christian Bigot card, and my Imbicile Card. Something fishy going on.

Tell you what, anne, if you can find anything in my blogs that says I'm a member of this group, go ahead and copy and paste it on here. I'd like to see it. And thanks for checking out my blogs. That's explains your fauxpas on calling me EJ Pearl.

EJ I also have a Disney World Photo Pass, membership has it's privileges.....

I just received an application for AARP....they say that "membership has it's privileges".....maybe HRH can confirm this for me since she probably has been a member for several years now.....

I'm keeping my eye on you ... : )

9:29 pm, claiming to be a Christian Patriot is good enough for me. Try this one on for size: "Just because I claim to be a Progressive Liberal, doesn't make me a member of that group."

<

Johnnie Cancelarich you have just stepped into the lion's den. Our society now thrives on perversion with absolutely no though of the consequences. Corruption, Pollution and global warming are the least of our concerns. We are spiritually bankrupt and drowning in immorality.>>

Why would you want to be involved with a religious movement/belief system that is so downtrodden? What a sad thing to go through this wonderful life on this beautiful planet with so many exceptional humans, but to only see gloom and doom all around you. And when so many among us are becoming enlightened and conscious, especially among the younger generation. This is an exciting time to live on this planet. We are on the edge of something monumental when it comes to spirituality.

Look back in history and there were many times when the people of this country were more corrupt and immoral. What is any more corrupt and immoral then what was done to the Native population when the Europeon invaders tried to "save them" or completely wipe them off the face of the planet. And what was any more corrupt and immoral then the slave era? Humans were tortured and killed because of the color of their skin and those who weren't killed were forced to work as slaves. What was more corrupt and immoral then the Salem Witch Trials? The list goes on and on.

Funny how followers of Christ only see gloom and doom and think that the world is surely coming to an end, but non believers are filled withjoy, love, hope for the future and excitement about what great things lie ahead.

That is something Electra having EJ sick up for you..

You just might have a chance if you play your cards right..

cgjung, does this answer your question? If not I have plenty more....

1Jo 2:14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

1Jo 2:15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1Jo 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.

1Jo 2:17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

In The Eye of The Beholder

Any Of Us Can Look at A Cloud

Some See Superman Out to Save The Planet

Some See Donald Duck Just A Smilin and A Quacking

And Some See Just A Cloud Just Floating Thru the Sky

Umm, still not seeing why one fixates on notion that the world is coming to an end, that there is "evil" all around, that we are in the worst of times, that anyone who doesn't "think" a certain way is going to burn in the fires of hell(which is mostly the hell that Dante created in his writing) and that if one doesn't believe exactly the way that they are told to believe, that they are against God.

These "worst" of times are actually a lot better than many other periods in American history. Sure, we have our troubled spots, but compared to other periods, this day and age isn''t nearly as "evil" as other times when large groups of people were tortured, enslaved, mutiltated and killed all at the hands of followers of Christ and the government.

I like to believe that the entity/power that created me is a loving, caring and hopeful entity. Not only was I created by that entity, but so was the Earth and thus the world. What a beautiful planet that we have been given to live on. What beautiful people are all around us. Why not focus on loving people, be accepting of the diverse nature of humanity believing that deep down that people are beautiful...if we just look past all the baggage? Why not love others just the way that they are as Christ did? Why not bring a message of hope and love, instead of worlds ending and people being fried?

On 1/6/10 at 7:08 PM, Blittler

It took me almost a full minute to find out that this was a totally made up rant. What I didn't determine in that time whether is what meant facetiously or seriously but it doesn't matter because you presented a fabricated diatribe as factual. You have absolutely no believability.

forHIMtoday: Don't waste your breath on cgjung......He's completely beyond saving. By the way cgjung, if you knew anything about the Native Americans you'd know that they aren't native to America. They migrated across the Siberian land bridge thousands of years ago and are actually from Asia. Hence the similar physical characteristics. Also the indians were nomads, they went from place to place depleting all the resources and then they'd move. And of course whenever they met up with a rival tribe they slaughtered them, often torturing them to death. So when new nomads arrived from Europe they did the same thing as the indigenous tribes did to each other ...fight for their lives. There are no tribes of Indians that weren't nomadic, so the ridiculous notion that the 'pale face' stole their land is absurd on it's face. They had no land, they were a nomadic people. If they claim the US as their land then why not Asia and Alaska and Siberia. Absolutely ridiculous....Also you mentioned slavery, you knowledge is also lacking in this respect as well. Slaves were taken by BLACK slave traders mostly working for the East India Trading Co .and the Dutch, not America. In fact America abolished slavery, we didn't create it. Try dumping your "spirtuality" and read a REAL history book.

cgjung wrote "Funny how followers of Christ only see gloom and doom and think that the world is surely coming to an end, but non believers are filled withjoy, love, hope for the future and excitement about what great things lie ahead." As a follower of Christ, I see the reality of what's happening around us. I see the increased corruption in our government, the increased greed and laziness in our people, and the increased decrease in morality and spirituality. At the same time, I see the love of Jesus Christ increasing in so many as they realize that He is the answer to their woes and problems. I see the grace of God as He allows one of His most glorious nations to turn its back on Him, and holds His wrath while giving us a chance to return. I also see the constant attacks on Christianity while all other religions get a free pass. Why? Because Christ is the only True and Living God, and the mention of His name irritates the ungodly side of men. As a follower of Christ, I see an eternity in the greatest place there will ever be...Heaven.

I, too, believe we are on the edge of something monumental when it comes to spirituality. We're on the edge of a Christian uprising. We're on the edge of Rapture. And we're on the edge of the return of the real Messiah. I hope you see the Light before this all happens.

11:18 am, isn't it odd how so many of these new commenters who just registered within the past 6 days are all forHIM supporters and members of the Religious Right. I'm celebrating it.

JD: I don't have time to read much of this stuff on the comments pages any longer, but did read your's at 6:20 AM regarding deletions, thumbing down, etc. Good explanation. As for the thumbing down, it does not take many individuals at all (not at all!) to thumb down a comment. It does not prove much. And had to really laugh at that comment by "Obamaoluva" concerning the right winger's comments being voted down. Very very little.

And yes, some posters have had their accts shut down and email addresses blocked, or so it seems. They deserved to as they abused, over and over, the BDN guidelines. Maybe they should have taken some responsibility for their actions and if so, would not have been removed.

And teddy we all know how the homosexual community carefully targets those states that are the least "spiritual" in the hopes of promoting their perversion to the general public at large. This all has to be so discouraging for you all. Can't help smiling over you losing California of all places.

11:59 am, it is bogus, because Democrats in the U.S. still have an 8 percentage-point advantage over Republicans. Which has nothing to do with the Religious Right, by the way.

**As a member of the human race, I see the corruption in our government and greed. I can't say that I see increased laziness in people. More and more young people are working hard to get a college degree, more than any other generation. Many of them are working full-time jobs as well as going to school full-time. Most young families have two adults working. I see hard working men and women all around me who have adapted to this fast paced, busy world that we live in. It is hard to function in this fast paced world if one is lazy because there is so much going on so quickly. We have the world at our finger tips right now because of modern technology, so more and more people are using this technology to educate themselves and to learn more about the world.

Our young people know more about the world beyond their small world, than any other generation. I do not see that our morals and spirituality have declined. I see an opening of the human mind and spirit. I see that most people in this modern world have become more accepting than ever before, realizing that it is not up to us humans to judge and/or condemn other human beings. I see a movement toward loving and accepting those who have been pushed to the fringes of society for far too long, in the very same way that Jesus did in his time. Our world is constantly evolving, so is the human race. We continue to define and refine the world and our place in it, to question and ponder. These are all good things, things to celebrate, things to feel hope about.

**How many Jewish holidays are national holidays? How many days off from school do children get because of Muslim holy days? When was the last time that you went to a "Kwanzaa " concert at the local school? What other religion is given a month filled with television shows, movies and commercials all about one holiday, as Christmas is given? How many school vacations center around important days in the Buddhist calendar? How many would allow their children to learn only Wabanaki songs to perform for the community in a concert? I'm pretty sure that people from the religions that I have mentioned don't at all feel that they have been given a "free pass." To them, it looks very much like Christianity has been given a free pass.

>

**I invite and welcome the mention of God/The Creator in conversations, as do many other agnostics. What gets under our skin is the insistence that we must believe exactly the way that you believe(based on your interpretation) or else we are going to hell, and that if we don't believe exactly as you tell us to believe, we are against God. I love to hear about how other humans believe, but I don't like being told that I am going to hell because of what I believe. I don't think that you will be condemned because of what you believe, so why must you insist that I will burn in the fires of hell because of my beliefs and understandings. I respect your right to believe as you wish, but I don't appreciate having those beliefs forced on me the way that many Christians do.

I would imagine that people thought that same thing during the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I and II(especially when the bombs wiped entire cities off the face of the map in an instant or when the details of the Holocaust were made known), the Vietnam era...etc. We are no close to the end of the world now then we were then, in fact in some ways we have become more civilized in this time than in past generations.

:)

I was reacting to your 70% quote...

"Most people Anne belive in God, more than 70%."

Nationally, I could care less... the most religious state is Mississippi, which also has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates. Seems to be the typical outcome as well.

I moved to New England (Maine in particular) from the South specifically because fundies (all Xians for that matter) are far less influential than in the "Bible Belt".

And I ain't goin' nowhere.

As for no Xians in the third world, um... I thought you were into facts? Uganda is a fine example.

If the third world country ain't muslitm it's Xian (Uganda being a fine example). Fundies are fundies... I really see no difference at the core. Bombing planes or shooting abortion doctors: it's only a matter of degree.

1/7/10 at 12:10 PM, forHIMtoday

Discouraging? What ever for?

My life has changed none... you keep acting like you've rid the world of we "immoral" homos, but we're all right here. Nothing has changed.

You live in a wold of awful things, I live in a world of wonderful things.

I also have the courts on my side... it's already making it's way through. Then my life will change: and it'll be out of your reach.

No matter how much pride you take in hurting people, you haven't really changed my life one bit: except perhaps a little more dislike and distrust for those who claim to be "of Christ". I'm sure he's happy with you for that.

You're the one who seems discouraged at how vile, evil, and full of sin the world is.

Not me.

cgjung what you espouse to is nothing more than New Age religion which is nothing new, its as old as the hills. I notice you frequently use the terms "I think" and "I feel". I would have to ask you, what do you base your feelings and thoughts on? "I think" the prescription on your rose colored glasses has expired.

cgjung,

Sorry... it's not a "real" religion unless you are as disgusted with the world as 4him and EJP.

If you think the world is a great place to be, you're a heathen.

I know teddy, I know! You believe in the responsible use of drugs, porn, abortion, and men marrying men. You are just so enlightened, I'm in absolute awe as to how much further you've evolved than us poor fundies that are just coming out of the cave into the light.

8:54 AM, EJParsons, actually we dislike individuals, movements, and organizations that mistreat people. Hatred is too strong a word.

cgjung, maybe this will help, its a command to Christians from Jesus also known as the "great commission"

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Mat 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

4him,

You've not come out of the cave yet. Don't give yourself more credit than you deserve.

That's why the world is so dark, dank, and cold.

But you'll get there one day.

12:50 PM, Ladyslipper,

Then why are Xians so convinced the world is nothing but pain and misery?

And I dislike Islam equally, by the way, EJ, and for the same reasons. They have the same rights as Christians under the law in the US. I would change that for all of you but I know that would be unconstitutional. One must abide by the law...

and He also said ...(now for all you liberals, this requires judgement, YES judgement) "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

1:05 PM, forHIMtoday, that's all well and good but what your organization actually does is mistreat people, cause their early deaths, and seek to exclude law abiding citizens from participation in civic life. Not to mention...."your imaginary friends..."

12:56 PM, ElectraGlide, ha....you are the MAN! great post.

1:08 PM, forHIMtoday, that requires YOUR judgement to know what is holy, who are dogs or swine, and an assumption that that pearls are yours, and that you know a pearl when you see one.

Obamaoluva maybe you should listen to your own advice about reading a "REAL" history book.

The William Wilberforce and the British abolished the slave trade in 1807 with the passing of the Slave Trade Act which Wilberforce championed for 26 years. That would be approximately 58 years before the United States of America abolished slavery.

The shippers were, in order of scale, the Portuguese (and Brazilians), the English, the French, the Spanish, the Dutch, and the North Americans and not BLACK slave traders as you want people to believe.

Most enslaved people were shipped from West Africa and Central Africa and taken to North and South America to work as unpaid labor on sugar, coffee, cocoa and cotton plantations, in gold and silver mines, in rice fields, or in houses to work as servants

Most contemporary historians estimate that between 9.4 and 12 million Africans arrived in the New World, although the number of people taken from their homestead is considerably higher.

Maybe we didn't "create" slavery but we perpetuated the practice for almost 90 years longer than we had to. The Second Contential Congress, in order to gain the Southern vote for Independence removed the prohibiton that Thomas Jefferson had written into the Declaration of Independence.

WilliamDS~~I will never Ever forgot the Day You Slammed Me With The Truth

A Nap Is needed NOW~So I do Not over-react to some personal Issues.

1:30 PM, HRH419, you know very little actually. That's the problem with that sort of "judgement."

Which truth was that, ElectraGlide?

Will see who knows what in the end William...talk about judgements.

1:08 pm and 1:42 pm, you Fake Christians couldn't possibly know anything of the pearls described by Jesus. Copying and pasting the Word and the name of God and the Holy Spirit here on these public blogs to try to win a political discussion is blasphemy, the single most unforgivable and unpardonable sin. You have already sealed your fate here many times over.

That's exactly my point, HRH, YOU don't get to decide what judgement is... But you keep trying.

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Mat 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." >>>

ForHIM:

And this is what you are doing here? Showing others what a "loving" disciple that you are and that we should all follow your path(of gloom, doom and despair). What part of what you do here is an example of the all-encompassing love and transforming power of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit? All I see come from your postings are judgement, condemnation, sarcasm, despair, unkind/unloving remarks about others who don't believe as you do. Nothing in your words models the love of the one who gave his life for humanity. Exactly what words that you have written here are an *example* of Christ's love, acceptance and transforming power?

BTW: I was involved with Christianity for the first forty years of my life. I researched, attended and was involved with several denominations including: RLDS, Congregational, Weslyan, Advent Christian, Pentecostal, Catholicism and some far out evangelical group from Toronto. I searched, studied and hardly missed a Sunday at some church for forty years, but I found nothing in any of those religions/denominations that brought me hope, joy, a sense of compassion or empathy. It took a life changing event of witnessing one man die of a sudden death and watching another slowly die over a ten year period for me to make my *own* trip into the desert alone for more than forty-days and forty-nights. I use the words "I think" or "I believe" because all I can do is share what I have come to know through my life journey.

I removed myself completely from organized religion because it had caused me nothing but heartache and despair. When I finally began to look deep within myself in the quiet and stillness found in the Maine woods(which for three years I spent 2-4 hours in every single day) did I begin to really *get* what the teachings of Christ were all about. Only then did I really understand how simple the message was, and how much we humans(particularly many who call themselves Christian) have complicated and frabricated such a simple message. I felt like I was given a second chance at life as I was able to stop drinking heavily, smoking cigarettes, over indulging, neglecting and abusing my body. I tried to make a list of all of the wrongs that I had done in my life and tried to make them right. I tried to learn from my mistakes and to make corrections in my life so that I might be a better human being.

After watching the love of my life suffer and die a horrid death from cancer, I decided that for the remainder of my life, I was try to find joy in the small things, that I would love the unlovable, reach out to those who have been downtrodden, speak up for those who have been oppressed and pushed to the fringes like Christ did in his time. I know that this life, in this human body, in this realm of existance and understanding, is such a short time. I want to use what time I have here wisely, being grateful for each day, each moment. I want people to see love in my eyes and in my face. I want to embrace others(even though they are different) rather than think I am superior over them.

After being so completely entrenched in modern Christianity for all of those years and then stepping back from it for the past five years, I can now see how blinded that I was by my shallow way of thinking. I realize now how unChristian that my beliefs, words and actions used to be(which I was taught at the various churches I attended). I have experienced firsthand the liberating and life saving transformative power that Christ talked about. I have been able to ask for forgiveness for those things that I had done wrong, sought forgiveness from many that I had hurt and then I have been able to forgive myself for how I was during the first forty years of my life.

I speak out now against the wrongs that I see. I speak out when I see one group of people wanting to degrade and condemn other groups of people. I speak out about the very things that Christ spoke out about. For the first time in my life I feel healthy, whole and full of joy and love. Call if "New Age" if you want, I call it really *seeing the light* for the first time in my life. Ever think that those who worship only where "two or more or gathered" rather than in a building, as a part of an organized religion, are the most Christlike people on this planet? One of his missions was to show us the evil in the organized religion of his time, how it tore people down and how it excluded many rather than build people up. Sounds like modern day organized religion to me.

As human beings there is so much for us to learn from each other. Why can't we celebrate our similarities and learn from each other when it comes to our differences?

cgjung, actually I have had the reverse of what you have had. I bought into the new age nonsense before I had "my eyes" opened to the truth. I once believed that all roads ended at the same destination. Here you are muck like the pharisee condemning me while at the same time condemning judging others. Quite hypocritical wouldn't you say?

I too was raised in organized "religion" and I now understand why Jesus had such strong words against it. You are now part of the very thing you condemn. Make no mistake, while your words may impress the secular, you yourself have probably never been saved to begin with. Attending church regularly does not a Christian make. You clearly fail to see the absolute depravity of the human heart. Failing to see that very thing keeps you from seeing it in yourself. Failing to recognize that very thing negates the need for a Savior in your own life.

So now that we're both claiming to have had our eyes opened to the truth, only one of us can have it right, or as New age Age would teach, "we can both be right". I can boldly say without reservation that you are completely wrong in your assessment and not one bit of it lines up with scripture. Jesus came to save the lost regardless of race, wealth, gender or status. He made the claim that He is the only way...period! There are no other options...period! You now call yourself an agnostic into indian spirituality if I remember correctly. Sorry, I for one don't buy it and neither does God. And all that I've just claimed can easily be backed up with scripture which for any Christian is the final litmus test....anything else is nothing but a lie...period!

I rest my case 4Him...or should I say you rest my case for me.

Yeah, sparky good thing the Republicans cames around and kicked you Democrats butt in the Civil War or else their would still be slaves in America. Your liberal pal Grand Dragon Senator Byrd of the KKK filibustered the civil rights act. The Democrats tried to stop Africans American from attending public schools and the National Guard had to be called in so the poor kids could attend class. Thousands of good Republicans died to free the slaves while the Democrats fought tooth and nail to keep them. Nothing has changed today, the Democrats have created a new slave class, the entitlement class. So dependent on public assistance that they are slaves to the party, and will elect any democrat in order to keep the checks flowing.

forHIM, nIce that you continue to speak for "GOD." It's all crap. The only thing that matters is treating all people with dignity and respect and causing no harm. period. Believing there is a supernatural being who punishes and rewards is just silly superstition that we in the 21st century are better off without. If your entities exist, and if I have interpreted my learning of "God's words" correctly, you are in for a big surprise. Lording your religious ideas over others and proclaiming yourself "saved" is going to get you cast into the abyss. You don't get to decide who is saved, including yourself.

I have no idea what your smoking chummie, but let me tell ya what....This is the United States of America. This country was founded by Christians for Christians. That is why, oh knowledgable one, there are no other religious holidays other than CHristian ones. And if you don't like it, why don't you move to Tibet and be a Buhdist. I bet they don't have many Christian holidays in Tibet either...Where did you get your education Beal College? If you have any doubt as to where you are, open your wallet, take out any denomination. Read it, see it, "IN GOD WE TRUST!" If you can't dig it, than beat it France has got some Euro's for ya!

5:05 PM, Obamaoluva, Strom Thurmond supported racial segregation with the longest filibuster ever conducted by a single Senator, speaking for 24 hours and 18 minutes in an unsuccessful attempt to derail the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Cots were brought in from a nearby hotel for the legislators to sleep on while Thurmond rambled on about random things, including his grandmother's biscuit recipe. Other Southern Senators, who had agreed as part of a compromise not to filibuster this bill, were upset with Thurmond because they thought his defiance made them look bad to their constituents. According to journalist Jeff Sharlet, he was a member of the Family (also known as the Fellowship), described by prominent evangelical Christians as one of the most politically well-connected fundamentalist organizations in the U.S.

Thurmond was increasingly at odds with the Democratic Party. On September 16, 1964, he switched his party affiliation to Republican. This man cannot be considered a good citizen, in my opinion.

Obamaoluva, oh yeah.......you really strike me as a good Christian. LO f'n' L

Your missing the point the entire Southern region was entirely Democrat at the time fought to the Death to keep slavery. And you faild to mention Byrd(D), the only living KKK member still in congress

I ain't mo fundie as you lefty like to call 'em. But I know what country I live in and it's a God fearing on. No matter what depravity you freaks throw at real Americans, we can't take it. But your gonna hear about it.

william, funny how you condemn me for speaking whats in scripture and claiming I can't know I'm saved, yet you have decided I'm headed for the abyss. Typical liberal humanistic progressive hypocritical gibberish. If it feels good and sounds good by golly its just gotta be right!

The Democratic Party has changed. Byrd joined the KKK in 1942. The whole country was racist in 1942. He dropped his membership in 1952. A whole lifetime ago. I doubt he holds racist views today. At least I hope he doesn't. The Republican party is not the Republican party of Abraham Lincoln. Don't even try going there...

Obamaoluva let me correct some of your assumptions about me and your version of history.....

Assumption #1 - "Yeah, sparky good thing the Republicans cames around and kicked you Democrats butt in the Civil War or else their would still be slaves in America."

Correction #1 - Not a member of the democrat party. Have never been a member of the democrat party. Was an independent until I change my party affiliation to republican and have never changed it back. I address your Civil War knowledge below.

------------------

Assumption #2 - "Your liberal pal Grand Dragon Senator Byrd of the KKK filibustered the civil rights act."

Correction #2 - Not my liberal pal. Have voted for Ronald Reagan x2, George H.W. Bush x2, Bob Dole x1, George W. Bush x2 and John McCain x1. Have voted for democrat Senators but have started to change my way of thinking. In the future I will vote for the candidate that will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution (and I do not mean the ship in Boston).

------------------

Assumption #3 - "The Democrats tried to stop Africans American from attending public schools and the National Guard had to be called in so the poor kids could attend class."

Correction #3 - I believe it was President Harry Truman (D), Dwight Eisenhower (R) and Lyndon Johnson (D) that championed the civil rights movement and ordered U.S. Marshals and the 101st Airborne Division (not a National Guard unit) to escort to public schools.

-----------------

Assumption #4 - "Thousands of good Republicans died to free the slaves while the Democrats fought tooth and nail to keep them. Nothing has changed today, the Democrats have created a new slave class, the entitlement class."

Correction #4 - The American Civil Way was not fought over slavery which is a popular myth. It was fought over states rights. Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (the first signed in 1862 and the second signed in 1863) only freed those slaves from states in open rebellion. It did not free the slaves in the North and the following Northern states had slaves; Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Delaware. Slavery continued to be legal, and to exist, until December 18, 1865, when the Thirteenth Amendment was enacted.

-----------------

Assumption #5 - "So dependent on public assistance that they are slaves to the party, and will elect any democrat in order to keep the checks flowing."

Correction #5 - You continue to show your total lack of understanding of the political process by making the assumption that someone that supports the democrat party is someone looking for a handout. That is simply not true.

-----------------

I look forward to the next installment of Obamaoluva revisionist history.

5:33 PM, forHIMtoday, I was paraphrasing... I don't believe there is an abyss but you do...

My generalizations about the Civil War are accurate, the States Rights debate was about the states right to continue slavery. The other pap you rattle off about I could care less about. You may say your a Republican, but after your postings, HA good one! You are out of your gourd if you don't think the over whelming majority of people on public assitance vote Democrat. And again if you don't think the Democrat party plays the people for their vote. In fact the Democrats next move, is to legalize 20 million illegal immigrants, why?.....For their vote of course.

Thanks for the history lesson JD..

JD2008 can use wikipedia......OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm so impressed at your copy, paste technique....Thanks for proving my point genius.

Obamaoluva you are so typical of so many people posting on here. You spout off "facts" and when proven wrong you dismiss them as "pap". I noticed that you;

did not dispute that the Second Continental Congress changed Thomas Jefferson's original draft to remove any regerence to freeing the slaves, or

did not dispute that England and not the U.S. ended slavery 58 years earlier, or

President Lincoln only freed those slaves from states in open rebellion.

What you call "pap" are facts and you are unable to dispute them because they are just that, factual.

And, no the National Gaurd (as well as US Marshalls) did escort students on multiple occasions, infact there are famous photographs of the event.

So looks like your corrections are all bunk.

I smell RINO!

Obamaoluva you are beginning to look very desperate and rather foolish.

On 1/7/10 at 5:17 PM, Obamaoluva wrote: "Read it, see it, "IN GOD WE TRUST!" If you can't dig it, than beat it France has got some Euro's for ya!"

Why do you assume that only Christians center their lives around a God? And show me exactly in the Constitution, Bill of Rights and The Declaration of Independence where it says we are to be a Christian nation because the leaders of that time were all Christian? Many of the forefathers/mothers were agonistic, atheist or believed in one God(not three).

Democrats loved slavery! Republicans (Lincoln{R}) ended it. Thanks again for proving my point. Good job!

No Obamaoluva, I can think for myself....if that is what you want to call a RINO then I will wear that badge with honor.

Huh three Gods? There is only one amigo. If you are referring to the Trinity, then you better go back to Sunday school sparky.

Obamaoluva, just for the record it was not President Lincoln that freed the slaves. But the sacrifice of some 360,222 (110,070 KIA) Union solders that freed the slaves. Not all were republicans. Many joined because they wanted to preserve the Union.

Because the Conferacy wanted the right to be soverign, so they could keep their slaves. Not all Union soldiers were republican, but the vast majority were. Vice-versa the Confederates.

Oh anne of MDI.... I have a link you'd might like, don't be mad http://www.gallup.com/poll/124958/Conservatives-Finish-2009-No-1-Ideological-Group.aspx

So sorry. But it looks like it's going to be a Democrat bloodbath at the polls next fall. Oh boy is this gonna be great.

Obamaoluva...I will fact check your last post regarding party affiliation when I return from my second job.

Yeah you better....Gallup Polls as well as Rassmusen have such an amazing reputation for "making things up!"

I love when you show a liberal facts, either their head explodes or they just start yelling and screaming. It's hard when the ficticious world they create for themselves goes slamming into reality.

Kinda like Al Gore right now with his "Global Warming" hoax. Apparently since it appears as though we are entering a new ice age, Al Gore has canceled all his up coming speaking egagements. Take the money and run Al!

Hey Fox haters.....Check it...........HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! The State controled media (NBC,CBS,ABC,PBS,CNN,MSNBC) is getting pummelled into oblivion.

Adios amigos!
