CORINTH, Maine — Two horses perished Saturday in a fire that destroyed a barn owned by Louis and Irene Goodwin on McCard Road.
No one else and no other animals were killed or injured in the fire that was reported about 3 p.m., Corinth Fire Chief Scott Bragdon said approximately three hours after the crew returned to the station.
The cause of the fire appeared to be an electric heater in the barn used to keep the horses’ water from freezing, he said.
The snowstorm and the property’s distance of seven to eight miles from the station made getting to the fire difficult, Bragdon said. Town crews went ahead of the firetruck and tanker to clear roads of snow and put down salt to make the drive less slippery.
When the crew arrived flames were through the roof of the barn, the chief said. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to a nearby home.
Bragdon said he called in extra tankers so that crews would not have to go back and forth to their stations to refill tanker trucks in the storm.
Trucks from Charleston, Bradford, Kenduskeag, Levant, Hudson and Glenburn brought water to McCard Road in case it was needed.
A crew from Garland was on standby at the Corinth station while its firefighters were at the scene, the chief said.
A state fire marshal is not expected to investigate the blaze, according to Bragdon.

Terribly sorry for loss of your horses. Sad..Larry T. Doughty, South Brewer
so sorry for your loss!
So sad! :(
such a sad story, sorry for the loss of your horses, big animal lover here, and i cant even imagin it. hope life will get better for you guys.
I am so sorry for the loss of your horses and barn.
Sorry for the loss of your horses...; if you do rebuild your barn, you can also save lives of other horses should you decide to have horses again from the equine rescue in Clinton. My mother is going to be giving them 3 belgians and 2 retired racehorses ....so many horses need rescuing to good stable permanent homes. So sorry again for your loss of your beloved horses.
tigerlady, there is no horse rescue in Clinton. There are, however, a few horse dealers/traders, which is not the same thing. It might be wise for your mother to double check the "rescue's" credentials before turning any horses over to them. There are some legitimate rescues in the area that may be able to help your mother, like Spirit of Hope Farm in Winterport, Last Chance Ranch in Troy, First Light Farm in Perry and Open Gates in New Gloucester.
For the folks who lost their horses in this barn fire, I'm so sorry for your heartbreaking loss...
I feel for your loss. You are in my thoughts. I love my animals and would be devastated. God be with you and help heal your heart.
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your horses, they are such beautiful creatures! I hope that you rebuild and get more horses, you sound like such great animal lovers,(after time to heal of course), Like Whatmeow said I also LOVE any and all animals, most of the time more than people, they give so much unconditional love, I have 3 kitties and would be devastated if theis ever happened to my babies, my house and stuff can be replace my boys can't. I wish you the best of luck under the circumstances, a
sorry hit something on the keyboard and it posted comment before I was done!
and I hope that you truely do decide to get more horses, there are SO many that need great homes, and you seem so caring from what I have read, so after you heal from this please consider adopting a homeless horse!
this is a horrible story i am so sorry about the horses i'm sure you cared about them since you really were trying to keep their water supply unfroze, but those heaters, in a barn, well, you see what happens...
my heart goes out to all your familt members who horses they were ... i"m a passed owner of 2 horses myself and if it were me my life would come to aa end ... remember no mater if big or small alll animals are a part of or lives some where...... my thoughts are with all of you at this terrible lose....
