State braces for snow, high winds

Highway and utility crews are bracing for a major snowstorm that could drop more than a foot of snow on some parts of the state before it moves out of the area Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a winter storm watch for eastern, central and northern Maine, but meteorologist Ken Wallingford said Thursday afternoon that forecasters still are uncertain about the full impact of the storm.

“We are still watching it,” he said from the Caribou office. “We have a general idea about what is going to happen, but we can’t tell with 100 percent certainty just yet. We won’t know its full impact until it gets closer.”

According to the weather service, low pressure will intensify southeast of the Gulf of Maine Friday through Saturday. The low then will move back toward the coast on Sunday and could bring significant snow to the region starting Friday and continuing through the weekend.

Wallingford said the storm was predicted to spread over Down East Maine and the Bangor area Thursday evening, with light snow predicted for the first part of New Year’s Day. The storm could grow gradually through the night into Saturday morning.

“That will be the first wave of the storm,” he said, with that system leaving as much as 5 inches of snow in the northern part of the state and 4 to 8 inches in eastern and central Maine.

“That won’t be as big a deal as the second wave,” he said.

The second system, which he termed “quite unusual,” is expected to develop off Nova Scotia and should blow into the state from east to west. Most storms travel west to east. Snow should start falling Saturday afternoon and continue well into Sunday. Buffeted by high winds and blowing snow, accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are expected, he said.

“As the second system tracks in we’re going to have more snow and more wind, blowing snow and drifting,” Wallingford said. “By Monday morning we’ll be looking at a total of 12-18 inches in some areas.

“The most snow with the greatest intensity will fall late Saturday night into Sunday,” he said. “The wind is expected to pick up on Saturday night. That is when we will see more blowing and drifting, and driving will become a lot more dangerous.”

Coastal flooding is possible as there will be winds and an astronomical high tide during the weekend. Ten- to 20-knot winds out of the northeast with gusts at 35 knots and seas of 3 to 5 feet are predicted.

Forecasters are urging holiday travelers to keep a close eye on the situation.

Maine Department of Transportation Communications Director Herb Thompson said Thursday that the agency was following normal pre-storm procedures. He said drivers and other staff members have been alerted about the possibility of being called out over the holiday weekend.

“It’s a typical storm situation, and we’re ready for them all,” he said. “We have alerted staff and let them know they will be called out if needed.”

Dale Doughty, regional manager of the DOT’s Bangor office, said that in addition to regular plow truck drivers, members of crews that usually work on bridges and road signs have received additional training and could be called on to clear downed trees or fallen tree limbs if the storm is backed by serious winds.

“With limited resources we’ve been training people for other tasks,” Doughty said. “We’ve had to be more flexible. We have people to come out and run saws or excavators if necessary.”

Central Maine Power Co. spokeswoman Gail Rice said the company began planning for the storm on Thursday, preparing staff and making sure all needed vehicles are filled with fuel and equipped. Like the DOT, the company already had contacted the Maine Emergency Management Agency to ensure that all communications between all the parties were established and that all were prepared for major problems.

“We make sure all critical employees are available and ready to move out when they are needed and where they are needed most,” Rice said.

The Bangor-based Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross is urging people in northern and eastern Maine to be prepared for the storm. The Pine Tree Chapter is available to assist Mainers with emergency plans and needs, and can be reached at any time by calling 941-2903.

The winter storm watch was issued Thursday for Penobscot, Piscataquis, Franklin, Hancock, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Somerset, Waldo and Washington counties for the weekend. Temperatures are predicted to range from the low 20s to the low 30s across much of the region. The winter storm watch will remain in effect from Friday afternoon through late Sunday.

In Bangor, police announced that because of the expected storm and astronomical high tides the Kenduskeag Stream East and West parking lots downtown will be closed from 6 a.m. Friday until Sunday afternoon. This includes the back lower level of the parking garage on the west side.

Residents flocked to grocery stores in Bangor and Brewer Thursday to purchase supplies ahead of the storm.

In Houlton, residents were stocking up on shovels, food and entertainment to see them through the storm.

In the parking lot of the Houlton Wal-Mart, Gail McPherson was carrying a shovel, an ice scraper and some DVDs to her car.

“I broke my shovel during the last storm,” she said Thursday afternoon. “I don’t have plans to travel this weekend, and I doubt anything good will be on television. So I decided to come out and pick up a few movies to watch.”

A short distance away at Paradis Shop ’n Save, Ann Landry of Houlton was going inside to stock up on supplies.

“I figured that I should get groceries now, because I usually pick them up on Saturday,” she said. “Now, that doesn’t look like it will be such a good time to go shopping.”

BDN writer Jen Lynds reported from Houlton, and BDN writer Walter Griffin reported from Belfast.

Bring on the snow and HAPPY NEW YEAR FOLKS

Happy New Year to Ward and my other goof friends in Maine. And, Mainer's, It is my hope and prayer that you all will Elect Some Real Conservatives to the U.S. Congress and Senate. Those two dames of Maine duped you all. They are Really Nancy Pelosi's posing as Ladies of Maine with Conservative Values. You all were duped. May 2010 bring Maine and the Rest of the Country Back To The Right Direction where Fiscal and Social Responsibility Returns to DC, including Legal Responsibility as well, and Immigration Laws will be enforced, and we can secure our nations borders before it is too late, and some of the thousands who cross our borders daily wind up bringing in A nuclear Bomb while we are Strip Searching Grandmothers at Airports looking for Terrorists, While Refusing to Profile Those Likely to Be Terrorists, such as 23 year old Nigerians traveling around the world carrying no luggage excpet a briefcase? Thanks and Happy New Year==Jerome Ennis, Tuscaloosa, Alabama jeromeennis@aol.com

What the hell do these posts have to do about a snow storm?

Welcome to Maine and all the SNOW.......Happy New Years 2010

LOL- Isn't this business as usual for meteorologists? “We have a general idea... but we can’t tell with 100 percent certainty just yet.” Let us know when you can predict anything with 100% certainty, please!

bring on the snow. 3-4 feet would be nice........................

Freerange: get real. You're a victim of the education of "certainty" and can't tolerate ambiguity (or maybe it's genetic; many are born with your plight). Can you predict anything with 100% certainty, especially as complex as the weather?

If there is anything that gets my hackles up, it is some out-of-stater telling me how I should vote. I think just for fun, I'll get my old Snowe and Collins signs out of the attic, and set them at the end on my road. In my view, they are doing just fine. I also doubt sincerely you will be able to "pray" them away.

My suggestion to you greyhawk1 is that you set your own house in order. Where do you reside? California, Florida, Massachusetts?

Snowstorm...Good opportunity for Maine welfare freeloaders to stay home and smoke the pot they bought using their foodstamps.

freerange=loser

Great idea Stewie! Lemme borrow some Zig-Zags off ya.

It looks like 2010 is off to a roaring start by the post here.

i will believe it when I actually see a foot of freaking snow on the ground.

I just ate my third coffee pot sandwich in less than 24 hours.

Harry III; "greyhawk" lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They have major problems with their internalized government too.

With the coming storm, maybe the folks who can get out to Hartstone's Hardware can still find one of those shovels that were advertised in the BDN a few months ago. I think some man in Hampden was making them; although they were not patented at the time the article was run. This would make shoveling a lot easier, especially for those with a weak back or heart conditions. I'd love to be back in Maine to get a taste of the winter weather for a change; even the smell of the air following a snowstorm is clean, fresh. I used to take walks at night when snow was on the ground, looking at the sparkling of the flakes reflected from streetlights, Christmas lights and lights from homes along the way.

We shopped all summer season to stock up on items, except immediate expendables such as milk, bread, etc, and put them in the pantry or freezer to enjoy when snowstorms roll through the area and bank us in for a few days. We sort-of miss it all, though.

Grab the shovel. Make sure the snowblower has gas in it. Contact Al Gore. Oh yeah and get a big gulp at the 7-11. Now you are ready for this storm.

That's Sir Albert to you guys....

You do realize those Coffee "Pot" sandwiches included a special ingredient. that's what made them so popular

Yeah, Well I kinda like Jeff Sessions. He's good on immigration and working for "fair" rather than Free trade. Lived in Birmingham for awhile, it was a real working man's town back then (late 60's.) great food, nice people, but they didn't want no Yankees telling them what to do either... I respected that.

stewie, it was the pickeled onions.

Hey Mainers. I wish I were there to enjoy the snow. Nothing like a beautiful snow storm, as long as you are prepared for it. And, I am sure that you good conservatives, like myself, always prepare for whatever nature throws at you. I truly became a conservative, in the turest sense of the word, when I lived in the North Georgia Mountains, where we would occasionally get some really heavy snowfall, and lose power for days or weeks at a time in the secluded area of the mountains where I lived. So, I always made sure that I had plenty of firewood, as I heated with wood as my primary heat source, and plenty of non-perishable foods, and on my property, I had a fresh water spring, so when the power was off for 2 weeks, I rather enjoyed it actually. Getting back to the basics of life is wonderful. Of course, in some near by neighborhoods, we had yuppies who moved to the mountains for their pristeen beauty and soon began turning this Pristeen Beauty into Carbon Copies of the Burbs they were escaping, and along with that, they brought their own political views, which tended toward Meddlers or Liberals, who wanted to Transform Everybody Else to their form of Governance and Ideas of how Everybody Else Should LIve. And, of course, these same Do Gooder Yuppies from the Burbs, when the Weather Got Bad and Turned Their Power Off, they were Misearable Because They Were Not Prepared. In their Deluded Minds, which all LIberals have, they just figured the Power Would Always Be On, and when their Conveniences, like Electric Power, was Gone, they suffered because they were Idiots and Did Not Prepare. Of course, being good, decent Conservatives, in spite of their Ignorance and Arrogance, We Would Lend a Hand and Save Them, and make sure they did not Die of Starvation or Hypothermia. We would go out in our 4-wheel drives or 4-wheelers and check on folks to make sure they were safe. Of course, we checked on the elderly first, and then then the incompetents second.

Thanks Harry III, SantiniSpagoandSpike and Stewie for your comments.

And Thanks Bruce for your personal reply.

While living in the North Georgia Mountains, I worked for 3 years as an outdoor therapist, and would spend 10 days a month, yearround, on the Appalachian Mountains backpacking with a group of troubled teens who were already incarcerated in one form or other, and when you put on your pack and hit the trails for 10 days at a time, with 10 or 12 first time campers/backpackers, you become very proficient at conserving and planning and planning for whatever the weather throws at you. My motto, "Better to have it and not Need It, than to Need It and Not Have It." You learn this lesson fast when survival is at stake. Myself, I never leave anything to Chance. I prepare for Eventualities.

As for Alabama, yes, we do have some serious internal problems, especially in Birmingham, which now is a terrible place to live, but at one time, was a well run city. Today, the Ignorant, Corrupt, and Incompetents have all but destroyed the city and the county of Jefferson. Their sitting Mayor is awaiting his Sentence on Bribery Charges and has already been removed from office. And, numerous others are already in prison, on probation, or under indictment, and in all cases, these bungling, corrupt, incompetents identify as Liberal Democrats, and naturally, like all Liberal Democrats, they Have Bankrupted the City and Country, and like all Liberals, they Keep Raising Taxes on those Who Work, those who Own Businesses, and On those Who Own Property, as they use their Taxes to Squander on Social Welfare Programs in order To Lock the Block Votes of Deadbeats and also, the Politicians, also Take Care Of Themselves first. Birmingham, Alabama, like most Metro Cities are hotbeds for Crime that Liberal Policies always create, as they create Government Housing Projects with Entitlement Minded People, who have been cultivated by the LIberals. And, from these government run slums, 90 percent of the street crimes come in the form of drugs, drug dealing, murder, rape, robberies, home invasion, arson, carjackings, and burglaries. And, the politicians and bleeding hearts always defend the behaviors of these thugs, and blame it On Somebody Else.

As for the rest of the state, we are in pretty good shape, and would be even better off if we would Abandon All Socialism at the state level. That is how DC has operated for the past 40 years or so. They Mandate States to do things that Are Not IN the best interests of the States or For Their Citizens. This is especially true of the Social Welfare and Education programs. So, we are going to be running Conservatives for Governor. We have a lady now, who is currently the State Treasurer, named Kay Ivey. She is a true Conservative in the truest sense of the word, as in Not Wasting Money. As State Treasurer, in her first year, she cut her departments budget by 6 million dollars just by getting rid of Amenities That Were Waste. She got rid of all the departments vehicles except One Staff Car that all employees Could Use on Official State Business Only, and One 5 year old Van that was used to Transfer Boxes of Records to the Archives. Many of the Bureaucrats in that Agency hated her for this, because many of them Had State Cars Assignedf to Them that they drove Back And Forth To work and used for their personal use.

This is the kind of Politician that we all need to elect at every level of government. We cannot continue to Spend More Than We Have. If the Federal Government were Held Responsible for Their Irresponsible and Criminal Acts, they would all be in Jail with Bernie Madoff. What Madoff did, compared to what this current Congress has done and Is STill Doing, makes Barney Madoff look like a 7-11 store shoplifter. And, Susan Collins, and Olympia Snowe, of Maine were the Only Two RINO's who voted for the 787 Billion Dollar Liberal Democrat Slush Fund, that they called a Stimulus BIll. All this near 800 Billion Dollars has Stimulated has Been Obama and The Liberal Democrat Congresses Supporters and is BEing reserved to Use to Purchase elections in 2010 and 2012. Four billion of this Slush Fund went to ACORN and others of their ilk. We have to bring Fiscal and Social Responsibility back to our States, Communities, and Country.

Have a Happy New Year Mainers---I know that most of you are Hard Working Yanks, and I mean that as a compliment. Some of the best people with integrity and spirit I have ever known come from Maine or are still there. It is a beautiful state with great people, and I look forward to visiting there some day in the near future. Keep up the Good Fight and Stay Prepared for Whatever The Weather or Government Throws at You. We Will Survive, but we must Prepare for Survival.

Happy New Year and Happy Trails---Jerome Ennis, AKA---Greyhawk from Alabama

And, Harry III, I am in Alabama. We do have some pretty good conservative U.S. Senators in Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby. Sessions is the more conservative of the two, and is in fact, one of my favorites in the entire U.S. Senate due to his Actual Conservative Views and Legislation that he has co-authored or supported. for Shelby, he tends to Like Pork, as is witnessed here in Tuscaloosa, where a New Federal Court House is being built as Another Worthless New Monument to Socialism by the U.S. Government. The old Fed Courthouse was more than Sufficient. We have to stop This Pork Spending Nationwide. The feds are just Expanding Size, Power and Expenditures of the Federal Bureaucracy and coming up with even more Creative Ways of Taxing us to Pay for Our Own Enslavement by the Feds. Taxes on tobacco and tobacco products, taxes on sugar or sugar products, taxes on tanning beds, and anything else they can Scheme and Scam to come up with Funding For The Feds Outrageous Nanny State Laws, and still they cannot Extract Enough Taxes and have to Borrow From Loan Sharks in Communist China, Imperial Japan, Germany, the Saudis and from Others that Are Not Looking After America's Best Interests, and who, are in Fact, Enemies of the United States. And, this President and Congress rather than Downsizing and Cutting Spending, they Are Expanding Size and Spending of Government which is what Caused the Financial, Social And Civil Breakdown in this nation to begin with. Spencer Bachus, U.S. Congressman from Alabama is also a good conservative who represents us all.

We must begin to Roll Back the Size, Power and Spending of the Federal Government and Remind those Scoundrels we elect, regardless of Party Affiliation, that they are their To Represent The Interests of This Nation and Us Citizens who Actually Work, Own Businesses, and Property and who Pay All the Taxes that these Scoundrels, in turn, Sqauander in trying To Grab Permanent Power, with No Regard for Taxpayers, With No Regard for National Security and The Best Interests of this Nation. Americans, from all states and all Political Persuasions had better Wake Up and Tell These Folks who Ostensibly Represent We, the People, that we Expect Them to Represent The Best Interests of this Nation and Our Security and Sovereignty, and Be Responsible in Spending and Governing. Their Quest For Personal Power and Future Political Aspirations, with no regard for their Citizens and This Nation, has to end. All we have left is Our Right To Vote, and with all the Illegal Voter Registrations by groups that are political Thugs of the Democrat Party, such as ACORN, it is going to take even more Responsible Citizens to Get Involved in 2010. We have to elect True Conservatives, and not One-Issue Republicans. We have to Unite and Stop the Internal Haggling over single issues. Once we gain power, then we can air out our differences, but to allow the Liberal Democrats and the Liberal MSM to Select Our Candidates, as they did in 2008, we will wind up with another Mealy Mouthed, Reach Across the Aisle Republican, like John McCain or an Olympia Snowe. We need some Leaders with Courage to not Be Politically Correct or Culturally Diverse, and instead, Be Responsible and Courageous, and Tell It Like It Is. And, how it is is this, The USA is in Deep Trouble: Fiscally, Socially, Educationally, Intellectually and Morally. We have to Stop the San Francisco Style Governing on a National Level. The U.S. government has already Established too many Laws and Regulations based on the Luncy of California or other Major Socialist States. And, as if this were not bad enough, we now have a President Who Has Brought Chicago-Style Shakedowns, Thuggery, and Subversiveness to the Rest of the Country. This must be stopped.

Thuggery and corruption are bad, but cowardice is what will finally bring this country down. You can not fight wars while being "politically correct" and if we are fighting a war, or several wars, EVERYONE should be made to sacrifice, not just the few sent into harms way. We won WW II by doing what had to be done. It wasn't pretty, but it was a solid victory. The win/loss column is what counts.

I'm so happy I moved to Phoenix
