Traffic was backed up on Interstate 95 in Bangor Monday morning as the result of an accident.

BANGOR, Maine – Icy roads early Monday morning apparently caused an accident on the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 between the Broadway and Union Street exits that closed part of the highway and jammed traffic several miles.

The road was re-opened just after 10 a.m.

A dispatcher at the Maine State Police barracks in Orono said the accident involved several cars but there did not appear to be any serious injuries.

Traffic was backed up at one point to the Bangor Mall area exits.

The roads were treacherous this morning. The DOT should have been using salt and sand on the roads. Looks like they were caught by surprise with this storm.

Transportation officials always refer to such "accidents" as crashes. This is because crashes are preventable. The icy road didn't cause the crash; the drivers were not driving at a prudent speed for the conditions. There needs to be consistency in these stories. Half of the time these incidents are called accidents, the other half of the time they're called crashes.

I agree with ryanrrobbins on this one. People need to slow down when roads are ice or snow covered. We can't blame the DOT for every crash.

It really never ceases to amaze me they way people will take their own lives and the lives of others in their hands and drive like idiots in these kinds of conditions. Glad no one was seriously hurt.

i wonder what sort of vehicle it was? it amazes me how people think 4x4 = invincible.

Kudo's To hampden PW! They started treating our roads at 7pm last night and stayed on top of it. Great Job!! Thank You for keeping our roads SAFE!!

So glad I don't drive. Even walking was treacherous this morning.

I'd like to see what caused this, I was on some unhealthy roads this morning and got through even though it burned up a few minutes, this being the interstate, I am sure it was someone who wanted to put everyone's life at risk this morning and ignored that flashing 45 sign. I am sure it was speed. Winter comes every year and many know the rules by now. Sadly nobody enforces them enough.

C'mon Mainers, tis the season. Leave early, and sloooooow down. It's really a "No Brainah"............

Hampden1 - so true they were out doing a great job, but when I first saw them running down the Kennebec Rd last night I was laughing thinking the little bit of snow that fell in the evening was nothing. Then when I got up to head to work this am and saw how icy everything was, I was happy they were out doing what they had to do to keep us safe.

PUT DOWN THE CELL PHONES PEOPLE...........

Sometimes I drive my 4X4 suv, sometimes I drive my 2WD car. I drive the same either way. While yes, there are idiots out there doing 65-70 in a snowstorm, you also don't need to go 5-10MPH at the first sign of a snowflake. I came up on someone on outer union st in the first storm doing between 2 and 5MPH (I thought they were stopped at first). When I safely passed them doing all of 20, they beeped and flashed their lights. To them, I was a menace, to me, they were traveling dangerously slow. I support safe driving and being prudent, but if you can't go at least 15-20 in a minor "snowstorm", maybe you should stay home. The Bangor Mall will be there tomorrow.

I'm with you kevin77......the people that drive too slow worry me. I live on a road that "crowns"....if you don't go at least 25mph, you will slide off.

95 was all right this week. drivers? not so much. i frequently pass 4X4s in the ditch while putting along in my 94 camry with regular tires. BTW, the WORST ROADS i have had to navigate are Rt 7 going into DEXTER from corinna and leaving to go to guilford. downtown DEXTER roads are a sad joke, with snow like mashed potatoes a foot thick. why is it newport, corinna, sangervile, and guilford can keep the road passable, but DEXTER roads are good only for a lombard log hauler???

I bet hollywood slots had something to do with this accident!

I bet the people were in a hurry to get to the methadone clinic.

hum... my husband, myself and our small son were stuck in this traffic and there were people coming off the ramp from Stillwater Ave and driving up the shoulder as if it were a third lane, then... as traffic began moving... they were swerving in and out of traffic trying to find the faster moving lane! Not one person mind you, I saw at least 4 or five cars do this... hum, how do accidents happen ! Freakin idiots!
