Gay marriage repealed in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — Voters on Tuesday repealed the state’s same sex marriage law after an emotionally charged campaign that drew large numbers to the polls and focused national attention on Maine.

With 87 percent of precincts reporting, the campaign to overturn Maine’s same-sex marriage law won with 53 percent of the vote vs. 47 percent opposed to Question 1, according to unofficial results compiled by the Bangor Daily News.

Gay-marriage opponents claimed victory shortly after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

TABOR, excise tax questions soundly defeated

BANGOR, Maine — Maine voters soundly rejected a pair of tax-related referendums that sought to reduce the excise tax on some vehicles and place limits on state and municipal spending. Proponents of Question 2, the excise tax initiative, and Question 4, known as TABOR (Taxpayer Bill of Rights) II, both conceded defeat shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

I am glad that the people of maine realized that the union of marriage is for a man and a woman. the people of the gay comunity should be thankful that the law prohibits the punishment that God set for homosexuality

Oh, now you've opened another can of worms...

What does this map tell us? I’ll tell you what: the same areas of the state...south and coastal...that have the most population growth, economic development and a FUTURE are the same area’s that don’t allow ignorance to dominate their lives. By the way economically depressed central and northern Maine, the demographics of the group you just slapped in the face indicate that as a group they are in the most educated and most professionally successful in the state. You can all go back to sleep now, knowing you are safe from the affects gay or lesbians might have had on your lives…they surely will not be establishing any businesses, spending any money or vacationing in your quaint owns.

correction, green areas are areas that don't let fallen values and morals dominate their lives.

JoeDoe... I'm pretty sure youre wrong. The red areas are areas in which people don't discriminate, hate, and DO beleive in equality. The red areas are where the future is... the law will change with time.... your hatred is BS

I think I'll teach about gay marriage anyway.

tommie: Yes, and many of these people, our fellow neighbors and citizens, contribute so much to our communities and country. It was short-sighted , to put it mildly, to deny these people rights and protections and treat them in a marginalized way (as that is actually what it amounts to.) This feeling of superiority that some seem to have will come back , someday, to be proven to be just part of this long road. Equality and fairness will win out in the end. It is just going to take longer for these people; to many of us, that does not seem right at all. Ulitmately, the U.S. Supreme will be the arbiter of this.....time will show this.

Oh, they'll be back, alright. They know that the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I think you misspelled your "handle"--you put "ed" when you meant to put "ing."

Most of us that live in the Green areas are happy not to have you flatlanders visit us anyway, so what's your point? Don't think so highly of yourself that we care if you come here or not.

Why don't the pink and red just jump in the water! Like rats when to many get in a cage they start eating each other. The gays and all haven't been able to get married for 5000 lets keep it that way.As for tommie,disgustedamerican,chersully,mainstreet,a3723ehopefullywherealldeadwhentheydo, why don't yall go live in a rest stop some where HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
