BANGOR, Maine — A threat of thunderstorms and rain Saturday night likely will not deter the planned Fourth of July fireworks show on the waterfront.

Officials maintained at 8 p.m. that the show still was on schedule. Sgt. Paul Edwards from the Bangor Police Department confirmed shortly after 8 p.m. that the "fireworks show is in fact still on and is to begin between 8:45 and 9:15 p.m., depending on when the best time in that span will be weather wise."

Tony Bernatche, the president of the Bangor Fourth of July Corp., a nonprofit arm of the Bangor-Brewer Kiwanis Clubs, said Saturday afternoon the fireworks will go off in the rain, unless there is heavy wind.

“I am planning to light fireworks tonight,” Bernatche said at round 3 p.m. Saturday.

The decision to call off the fireworks, Bernatche added, would come from the U.S. Coast Guard and a technician from Central Maine Pyrotechnics, the Hallowell-based company in charge of the display this year.

If the fireworks are postponed, the makeup date will be Sunday, July 5, said Central Maine Pyrotechnics Manager Carole Marson.

Saturday’s forecast, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou, includes showers and thunderstorms until 8 p.m. and scattered showers from 8 until 10 p.m. Rich Norton, a NWS meteorological intern, said the weather service has not yet issued a severe weather warning for the Bangor area because neither strong wind nor large hail is expected.

Sunday night’s weather doesn’t look much better. Forecasters aren’t expecting much precipitation during the day, but there could be scattered showers from 4 to 10 p.m., Norton added.

What's the latest? It's still raining at 7:30pm. Is it still tonight or tomorrow? Thanks!

I don't see why after all this rain they couldn't postpone it until tomorrow........how many families are going to take their young children out as wet as everything is? I know mine were looking forward to tonight for quite some time but it looks like they will be very disappointed

It would be nice to know whether or not they are going to happen... given the number of people that drive to these things...

pretty obvious its going to h appen given it says UNLESS HEAVEY WIND.. its not windy... go sit somewhere in your car and watch them o-0

What a waste of money...

I think we'd rather have waited 'till tomorrow for a shot at a nicer evening. Off to bed for us! Better luck next year. :-(

weather is looking better for tomorrow....but its not at dark as it was over bangor right now from what i am looking at....it might clear up....still sprinkling though..

WABI reporting at 7:55 PM Fireworks to go on as scheduled

Kond of stupid to have them in the rain---with the low cloud cover, you won't see anything but rose colored clouds, ornage clouds, elctric blue clouds...

All that money raised for a show and they are going to shoot it in the rain. Lets see how much fund raising they can do next year when they let so many down this year. I thought the reason you have a rain date is in case of rain.. Silly me.

Anyone know if Searsport is going tonight or tomorrow, maybe we can all drive to that show.

LawDisOrder,

I think Searsport is postponing---I just saw my neighbors returning home about 10 minutes ago.

Thanks Frankforter, lets all meet in Searsport Sunday night. Spend our money there....

Thanks for the show, Kiwanis!

I DISAPOINT!

Fireworks in Eastport canceled. Everyone left. Ghost town again.

And now they've canceled Eastport's fireworks altogether. I guess the locals just aren't worth it.

I had called channel 5 at about 7:30 saturday night- they told me that the show was to go on.......we watched the fireworks from the

Bangor Auditorium parking lot (in the truck). Nice warm and comfortable seats! Despite the "yucky" weather, we still enjoyed the show. Thank you to all that funded the show.....: )
