On Thursday morning, more than 40 members of the Maine Air National Guard were deployed to Iraq.

Lieutenant Colonel David Vashon, Commander of the 101st Civil Engineering Squadron, was the first to begin the process.

"We have had many people volunteer to deploy in the past," Vashon said in a press release, "but this is the first time our unit has been mobilized as a whole."
