Town Council Chairman of council in Millinocket to resign
MILLINOCKET, Maine — Town Council Chairman Wallace Paul will resign effective July 24.
A councilor since November 2004, Paul is among a half-dozen Brookfield Renewable Power Inc. workers whose jobs are moving to Massachusetts under a nationwide company consolidation plan, company officials have said.
“My impending move from Millinocket makes it impossible for me to fulfill my term, so I leave in a timely fashion that will allow others to seek the office,” Paul wrote in a recent letter to Town Manager Eugene Conlogue and the council.
“Please accept my sincere gratitude for the support and friendship that have made my term amongst the most challenging, stimulating and rewarding periods of my life,” he added.
As a system operator who helps control the company’s New England hydroelectric power generation operations, Paul’s job is among six to eight out of about 38 to be relocated from the company’s Central Street offices as part of the plan.
The company plans to establish its U.S. operating headquarters in Marlborough, Mass., or other locations in that area. Paul and Brookfield officials did not return telephone calls seeking comment.
In the November election, Paul received 1,083 votes, besting fellow winner and Councilor David Cyr, who had 715. Paul has been council chairman since May 25. He replaced David Nelson, who left town for a job in Milwaukee in mid-2007.
Paul’s departure will leave the council with six members. His seat will be filled by a candidate in the November elections. No successor as chairman has yet been named.
